If you remember nothing else, remember this…
The nightmare is here. There is no way out. Even death isn’t an escape because it is death. And chances are it’s already taken everyone you know.
…You’re on your own.
Just because the face is familiar doesn’t mean they won’t kill you. Hiding won’t help. And it’s past time to run. They’re already here. And hunger is the only thing they feel.
The Hunger Chronicles A collection of shorts eBook Tes Hilaire
Review: THE HUNGER CHRONICLES is a collection of short stories based in a zombie apocalyptic world, however this novella goes way beyond all expectations of zombie stories. I was flabbergasted by the amount of character depth and how instantaneous I connected with each of the main characters. The voice is so different for each one that I it doesn't even seem like one author wrote THE HUNGER CHRONICLES.By 50% I knew I had to go see if this author wrote any other books. By 100% read, I was ready to purchase the companion book. And, then I discovered that it was her only book not available in paperback.
Each story is stand alone. The stories combined paint a hopeful yet morbid picture of what society has turned into. I think the `hope' resonating through each story is the reason why I found the novella so irresistible. In most zombie books, there is no hope. There is no plan for redemption. But, each of these stories, particularly show that there might one day be an end to the zombie epidemic. Now, forgive me as I beg the author to release LIFE BITES on paperback for me.
EDIT: August 1st LIFE BITES releases on paperback!

The Hunger Chronicles A collection of shorts eBook Tes Hilaire Reviews
A really cool read! Not very long, but it was perfect for setting up the world you see in Life Bites! There are multiple stories, and each one is great! Tes Hilaire's zombie infected world is awesome! Check it out in The Hunger Chronicles, and you'll definitely want to read more of it in Life Bites. Eva is in the last story, and you see more of her in Life Bites. She is one tough cookie, and you only get a taste of it here. Definitely try it! Great read!
As far as anthologies go, this one wasn't bad. The characters were mildly interesting and the writing style is pretty good and you can tell that the author has a passion for zombies!
Zombies that feast on the flesh of their fallen comrades was a new twist that I really did enjoy. The only parts of this that I didn't like was that the stories were a little too short for my taste. Plus I didn't like that the author tried to put vampires in one of the stories. Zombies and vampires just don't mix well.
Give this one a shot.
The opening lines caused me to laugh they were so trite. But I didn't hate it. I felt like I was reading a writing exercise until the last story and BAM! The author found her groove.
This is worth it just to read that last chapter and to get an awesome tease to the full length novel. Maybe someone else has written it but I haven't read it. Vampires zombies. Vampire zombie killers. Now.... the rest you'll have to read to find out for yourself.
The first stories, kind of windows into the world build from different people's pov, go anywhere from 1.5 to barely a 3 but that last is a 4.5. I'm of to buy The Hunger Chronicles now.
The Hunger Chronicles is a small collection of short stories...zombies stories. I expected gore, predictable ending, and flat, forgettable characters and was pleasantly surprised at getting each wrong.
The short stories were okay, not WOW! but interesting in their own way.
Then I read the bonus chapter from Life Bites and fell head over heels in love with Eva.
You see, the short stories in The Hunger Chronicles served as the best world building tool I ever saw. I know more about that zombie infected world thanks to those short stories. So when I read the bonus chapter at the end of the book, I was knowledgeable about the world but not enough about Eva.
I'm writing this review right after I purchased Life Bites. I simply want to know more about Eva.
"Outgunned or not, I was going to find that bast***. And this time it was going to be him lying in the dirt. Only I wasn't going to make the mistake of leaving him half-dead." I was in it for the four short stories "Imminent Contact" "End of the Rope", "Two's Company" and "The Fittest" all four superb such that I can't choose a favorite. I really liked the fact that the dialogue was moving, the action scenes clicked nicely and there was a strong female protagonist that I actually cared about. While each story occurs during the zombie apocalypse they are all different first one being a military style short, the second involving a fight or flight scenario, the third introducing a dog into the picture and the fourth a vampire. I'll be sure to check out more of this author's works as I was very impressed and heartily recommend as a result!
I'll be concentrating on reviewing Halloween themed book thru the month of October for the second year running so feel free to "see all my reviews" most recently if you're of a like mind and am looking for some spooky stuff this time of year.
The Hunger Chronicles
First thing I have to address is the Title. I think it is too Hunger Games-ish. I am not sure if it came before or after but I think it was after and the title really distracts from such an interesting collection. These stories are not trying to be Hunger Games to me and I think the title gives that impression.
There are four stories, each about a different person and situation in a post-apocalypse world where an infection, the z-virus, is turning humans into flesh eating zombies.
Imminent Contact is a story of hope and, to me, forgiveness. It features Amy, a kick ass military soldier bent on reclaiming the streets. She is on a mission to clear a city block with three other soldiers when things go unexpectantly wrong. ‘nuff said won’t ruin it.
End of the Rope left me hanging! LOL! I needed to know more. Megan is left alone in a cabin after her parents are infected. She is lonely and ill prepared. I hope Tes Hilaire finishes this story or we meet up with her again.
Two’s Company was my favorite. It features man best friend. It had me biting my nails and skimming forward to see how things turned out.
And finally The Fittest. I have to admit I didn’t really get this one at first. It’s a lead up to the book “Life Bites” and features Eva. I read the synopsis of Life Bites a few times and always passed it up but after reading these stories I got it for my . It takes the Zombie outbreak into a more paranormal realm.
